The Iver Kanten family came to Southern Minnesota in 1864. By 1870 they had established their permanent home outside Watson.

Hans came directly to Watson in 1885. He made the journey from New York on the train.

Martin Ulvestad published "Nordmændene i Amerika" (Norwegians in America) in 1907.  This two volume work, published in Norwegian, included lists of early settlers (note Iver Kanten's entry above), elected officials, Civil War veterans, and settlement histories for most of the counties in Minnesota.  Although the history for Chippewa County does not mention the Alms or Kantens, it does refer to Zion Church and may include information about pioneer families familiar to those from the area.
