Ole Erickson was not raised by his parents and probably
had a difficult childhood. In any event, he was not a successful man. He
married Johanne Hansdtr December 4, 1853. They moved from
farm to farm in the Hadeland area and for at least some period of time
the family was on poor relief. Hans saw his father's drinking as the
source of the family's problems.
Hans' mother, Johanna, worked hard to make do with what little Ole could
provide. Her children loved and admired her.

Oleson Alm was born on the Dvergsteen farm in Tingelstad, Hadeland
Norway on
September 9, of 1864.
Hans was Ole and Johanne's fourth child and second son. He began working at a very young age tending animals on the farms
where his family lived. He recalled to his children that before he
reached his teens he lived in a bunk house with other single men and
boys. Each of them had a spoon hung by the door. Soup would be eaten by
the men from a shared bowl in the middle of the table. Daily meals
(sometimes all three) would often be souring cream served in a common
bowl and slices of dried bread. The "Cream and Bread"
that gave title to a series of humorous books about Norwegian Americans
was not warmly remembered by Hans!
On his own initiative he became a painter's apprentice and learned the
trade he would follow the rest of his life.
