Although 5 of Aslak and Kristi's children would live to adulthood, 7 others - two Ranneis, an Ole, two Tarjes and two Aases - died before they were two years old. Imagine the emotional toll of having so many babies born and then die, using the same family names again and again, as was the Norwegian tradition. Even though the times and expectations were different, this had to be a difficult and numbing experience. |
