Tarje and Geline's Grandchildren

Tilde's Son

Arnold Thomas Sandwick

Born: November 17, 1900 Ottertail County, Minnesota

Died: November 11, 1964

After leaving college in 1920 or 1921, Arnold worked in logging one winter on the Oregon coast as a "whistle punk" laying out the line in the woods that controlled the signal whistle on the hoisting donkey that yarded logs out of the woods.

Later he worked as a hired hand at the ranch of Henry McCall, son-in-law of the 9th richest man in the U.S., near Prineville. (Tom McCall, future governor, was 9 at the time.)  There Arnold started a lifelong avocation of raising Holstein cattle, and he had a bull which was Reserve Grand Champion at the Pacific International Livestock Exposition in 1925 or 1926.

On October 19, 1924 Arnold married Irene Deach.  They had three sons and two daughters.

After a partnership in a dairy and a stint with the post office, the family moved to a small "hobby farm" in Tumalo. Arnold worked his way up and into a position in a railroad repair shop that he held until the facility closed.

Irene taught in rural schools and was a longtime member and deacon of Tumalo Community Church where she served as pianist/organist for 50 years. She was an avid gardener, loved her pets and was known in the neighborhood for her checkerboard cakes.  She did in 1992.
