Petition for A Civil War Pension
Amund & Margit's eldest son Gjermund (James) died during the Civil
War, and Margit applied for a survivor's pension. It appears
that it took over 10 years for her to receive those benefits.
Nancy Hetrick provided a copy of the affidavits associated with that
application. Although the agenda was certainly to assure that
Margit qualified for benefits, these documents provide valuable
information about Amund, the family's farm and life in Houston
County, and Gjermund's service in Company "E" of Minnesota's Second
Infantry Regiment.
