World War I Draft Registration
In a letter to his brother Bernhard in France, Carl explained that he expected to be drafted, but when he fell victim to the flu epidemic of 1918 that call-up was delayed. Carl recovered from the flu without complications, and the end of the war came before he could be called into the Army.
