The site of the Grinaker Stave Church

Grinaker Stave Church was built in the 1200s.  The Black Death decimated the population of Hadeland in the mid-1300s. The story is told that Grinaker Church was forgotten until a shepherd boy looking for sheep rediscovered it over 150 years later.  It was a small church, and could easily have been overgrown, so the story may have merit.

Ole and Johanne were married in this church on December 4, 1853.  Their oldest children were baptized there.

In the early 1860s, it was decided that all churches must be able to seat at least 40 percent of their congregations.  Grinaker Stave Church was unable to meet that standard, so it was torn down and replaced by the "new" Tingelstad Church, built in 1866.  The rest of Ole and Johanne's children were baptized at Tingelstad.

The baptismal font from Grinaker Church was moved to Tingelstad.  The font continues to be used at Tingelstad church and was therefore used to baptize all of Ole and Johanne's children.
